GPS-Based Cat Location Monitoring

A web application that receives GPS device locations and shows a cat’s position, distance from home, and daily movement history.

TECHNOLOGIES USED

Laravel 10 / PHP / MySQL / Blade / Bootstrap 4 / JavaScript / Leaflet / OpenStreetMap

Preview of GPS-Based Cat Location Monitoring

PROBLEM

Periodic GPS coordinates are hard to interpret as a list of numbers alone. An owner needs to see the latest position on a map, know whether the device is still reporting, and review when the cat was near or far from home.

MAIN FEATURES

  1. 01

    GPS location intake

An API endpoint validates device latitude and longitude before storing a location.

  2. 02

    Map and latest position

The dashboard plots locations on a map and shows distance from home.

  3. 03

    Near, far, and offline status

Status is calculated from the home radius and time of the latest location update.

  4. 04

    GPS log and date-based reports

Location history can be reviewed, while reports summarize distance and movement by day.

  5. 05

    Optional alerts

Email alerts are available when a location exceeds the radius, if the feature is enabled.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Laravel backend receives latitude and longitude through an API and calculates each point’s distance from home. The near/far radius and offline timeout are configurable. A Leaflet map with OpenStreetMap tiles shows the latest position, device status, current distance, and five recent locations. The application also has a paginated GPS log and daily reports covering near/far points, minimum and maximum distance, and total movement. When enabled, email alerts can be sent if a location exceeds the configured radius.

RESULT

The latest position, device update status, and GPS history are available in one dashboard. Date-based reports make movement easier to review without calculating distances from raw coordinates manually.
